The pachira aquatica is native to Mexico, Central America and South America. In its natural habitat, it can grow up to 60 feet tall (versus six feet tall indoors) and without braids.

Its name is derived from early Feng shui practitioners, who believed that this plant created positive energy for any room that it was placed in. It was believed that each new leaf on the stems would bring added financial success.
